Another setback occurs in push for new turnpike plan in
Another setback occurred Monday in the push for a new turnpike plan through Cleveland County. This setback looks as though it will take some time to figure out. The issue is with Lake Thunderbird. A turnpike cannot go through the lake but the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority had hoped and planned to go through the land around the lake. The land is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and unlike regular property owners, they can say no.In a statement, the OTA said the bureau denied its application, saying the turnpike would not meet the land’s intended purposes as authorized by Congress. This means the southern extension of the Kickapoo Turnpike would need to find a new path that avoids land to the north and west of Lake Thunderbird which is owned by the bureau. How this impacts other landowners in the area remains to be seen. The state said the new turnpikes are necessary because traffic along the Interstate 35 corridor through Norman and Moore will be extremely congested in years to come.
