Fishing on Lake Conroe is good. The water temperature at the dam early in the morning has been running 76.65 degrees, and once the sun gets up, it can rise to 85 degrees. The water level is 199.73 feet, and no water is being released, according to the San Jacinto River Authority.
There are still many more boats than normal on the lakes while the coronavirus continues to keep many of us away from work and limit our potential activities. When you go to Lake Conroe for fishing, practice common courtesy, as the lakes and marinas have been crowded.
Black bass fishing is fair to good. Fishing guide Butch Terpe said the bass have been shallow early before the sun gets up too high. He indicated that soft plastic worms and Baby Brush Hogs are bringing some action in the shallows, as are spinner baits. Once the sun gets up, the bass go down to deeper structure and Carolina-rigged soft plastics or deep-diving crank baits are a good starting point.
Crappie fishing is in its summer pattern, according to Terpe. He reported some people are catching a few keepers around the FM 1097 bridge pylons and around the main river channel in varied depths of water on brush using minnows. One day’s crappie fishing may only net you four or five keepers.
Catfish are good. Terpe said he had parties out every day recently, and the bite has been good. The sizes are running 1-2 pounds with and occasional 3-pound pound catfish landed. The catfish he has found are biting well on baited holes along the channel edges in 18-22 feet of water. Good bait for catfish right now is shrimp and dip baits. Terpe said he personally likes a No. 8 sponge hook with dip bait.
Hybrid stripers and white bass have been up one day and down the next. Terpe said he had his best luck trolling over points and humps in 17-25 feet of water. One party he was with caught four keeper white bass and four keeper hybrids. One day later, he took a party out, and they caught 19 keeper white bass and three hybrids.
Bream are biting well around riprap and docks on meal worms and night crawlers shallow under corks. Later, they can be found deeper on brush or other structures. Terpe had a bream trip out last week, and they caught 31 large, hand-size bream using slip corks and night crawlers in 12-15 feet of water.
Terpe, who works out of Stow-A-Way Marina, has made the facts and information for this fishing report available. Terpe has been a full-time guide for more than 30 years. For information about his services, call 936-856-7080. For information about Stow-A-Way Marina, call 936-856-4531.
