Fishing on Lake Conroe is good. The water temperature in the main lake is running 68 degrees at the dam at daylight and 74 up north later in the morning. The water level is 200.03 feet and no water is being released according to the San Jacinto River Authority.
There are many more boats than normal on the lakes due to folks being stuck for something to do while the coronavirus has had most of us away from work and captive in our own homes. So if you go to Lake Conroe or Lake Livingston be extremely careful as the lakes and marinas have been seriously overcrowded.
Black bass fishing is good. Fishing guide Butch Terpe said the bass have been shallow. He said he caught a 7.00 pound bass on the nest, and had a party out that caught 12, on soft plastic worms and Baby Brush Bogs. He said a few are still spawning but the shad are spawning and in the shallows, so the bass are after them and are biting well there.
Crappie fishing is so so according to guide Butch Terpe. He reported catching a few around the FM 1097 bridge pylons and around the main river channel in varied depths of water on brush using minnows, and a few people are using jigs. Those caught are usually good size fish but it takes all day to catch just a few fish.
Catfish are excellent. Terpe said he had two parties out recently and a father and son caught 40, and another party he had out caught 50. The sizes are running 1 ½ to 3 pounds. The catfish he has found are biting well on brush along creek channels in 20 feet of water. Good bait for catfish right now is shrimp and dip baits. Terpe said he personally likes a number 8 sponge hook with dip bait.
Hybrid stripers are sometimes being caught with the catfish on baited holes. White bass may also be found chasing shad down to about 8 feet deep.
Bream are biting well around riprap and docks on meal worms and night crawlers. Good hand size bream are being caught on minnows on the brush with the crappie.
