Fishing at Lake Conroe in general is slow to fair. Water temperature is running 51 degrees at the dam and up to 55 degrees in some of the cove. The water is clear, and the level at this time is 199.12 feet which is about two foot below the normal pool of 201 feet and no water is being released according to the San Jacinto River Authority.
Black Bass are a little slow. At the Stow-A-Way Tournament this past weekend, the big bass was 7.76 pounds. The larger bass are anywhere from 16′ to 20′ deep. Small ones are in the shallows, near the bank. They are biting best on plastic worms. The best colors for the soft plastics are greens like Sour Grape or Pumpkin Gold with chartreuse tails, Gourd Green, and Watermelon Seed with black flakes. Also good are wacky style Finesse worms on a small hook. The shallow bass are also biting on 1/4 ounce spinner baits in white or chartreuse.
Crappie are a little slow. Those caught are around stalls in marinas, over some brush, and the FM 1097 Bridge. The bite is erratic and most anglers feel it is the training of weather fronts causing the problems.
There were a number of parties out recently and they caught a number of small white bass. No keepers but a number of them. Hybrids and White Bass are mixed together on the sandbars. Some anglers are catching them on spoons, like 1/4 ounce Charlie’s Slab and Cobra, in 21 to 23 feet of water. One party caught 6 nice hybrids in the 6 pound range in the same area.
Bream are really slow due to the cold water. Those caught are in the deep water with the crappie and are large enough to take the minnows and large hooks.
Channel and blue cats are still good on prepared baits and liver or shrimp dipped in punch bait. They can be found almost anywhere, but the best is baited humps 18’ to 25’ feet. Fishing around baited boat docks is also showing some fair catches.
