Fishing on Lake Conroe has been picking up for the past week. The water is clear and the water temperature at the dam has been running 52 degrees early in the morning and warms up as the day progresses. The level is 199.38 feet and no water is being released. Pool is 201 feet above mean sea level.
Black bass have been found at depths of from one to 10 feet. Texas or Carolina rigged worms in Watermelon, Pumpkin, Black/Blue or Junebug are the best soft plastic producers. Anglers are getting results along the banks where there is grass down to the water. When the sun is bright the bass can be found in the shade of boat docks. Spinner baits are good especially using nickel and gold Colorado blades, with white and chartreuse skirts. Small, shallow running, crank baits are working well also.
Crappie are beginning to stage in the creeks and also starting to show up at 15 to 25 feet around the docks and marinas as well as on brush piles. Fishing brush is sketchy and one or two crappie may be harvested and then you have to move on to another one. Minnows are best for bait.
Catfish are excellent on chicken liver anywhere on the lake from 20 to 30 feet deep. They are on baited holes, main river and creek edges. Size of fish caught have been reported to be from one to two and one half pounds, but now and then a 3 or 4 pounder will show up.
Whites are starting to show up at Stubblefield, so that will just continue to improve for the next month. Some hybrids are suspended at 20 to 30 feet, over humps in the main lake. The best bait is 5/8 ounce spoons, like Charlie’s Slab or a Branson Bug, in white or chartreuse, vertically jigged or trolled.
